De La Salle Reds 6 - 3 Typhoon
The sun only rose half an hour or so before kick off on a cold January morning. Typhoon were missing several players due to illness and it was a heavy pitch.
We started well with Cole smashing one into the top corner on our first attack but DeLa are a good side and pressured us and equalised. They press so far up we caught them offside on dozens of occasions, in fact the ref was laughing about how many he’d given with the ref for the next game. However, it only needs one player not to step up and you can get caught, which happened for their 2nd. It was offside but not obvious enough for the ref to give it. A fairly soft goal just before halftime put us 3-1 down but we were right in it. Ronan couldn’t convert a great chance, their keeper pulled off a tremendous save from a Joseph header and Cole was giving their fullback a torrid time.
The second half was more of the same, Typhoon kept their heads up but ran out of steam a little. Jamie’s heel problem prevented him from affecting the game in his normal manner, Freddie pulled a muscle in his leg and the rest of the boys looked very leggy. The boys are getting older now and Freddie and Sam have both pulled muscles at the start of games. The boys hate doing stretches and the like but hopefully they’ll see the point because we’re going to be doing some more from now on.
DeLa scored 3 more in the second half and it could have been more as tired minds and bodies affected our discipline. Peter stepped up and made some good saves.
It was far from one way traffic and we played some better football in the second half with Joseph and Charlie pulling the strings. Charlie’s performance earned him the man of the match. He was committed and full of running but it was his use of the ball that impressed. Instead of keeping his head down he was winning it, passing it and getting on the end of the return and was rewarded with a goal. Joseph also got onto the scoresheet following in a Ronan effort, which beat the keeper but not the mud.
Reece was up there with Charlie and Joseph, combative throughout and covering several positions as injuries demanded. Harry had a very tough morning against a tricky and rapid winger but he kept at the job manfully and did himself proud, as did Sam, Ronan and Freddie.
All told it was a good performance, though I couldn’t wait for the game to finish as we were shot by the end. The boys never stopped trying or let their heads go down and we now have some, hopefully, easier fixtures to come.
