- WINTON SPARTANS V TORNADOES
Saturday 6th April, Cleavley's Playing Fields, KO 9.30am, Supplementary Cup.
It was quite a tense and even start to this, our 3rd group game in the U9s Supplementary Cup, against our old friends from Winton, the Spartans.
On a lovely day for football, and with Jack in hospital (get well soon!), the boys didn't initially look to be up for this game.
However, as seems to be happening a lot this season, we slowly but surely started to feel our way in to the game and once George scored, the boys began to settle in to their rhythm.
George really got a grip in midfield as Dylan, Colin and Logan (deputising in nets) took command of our defence. With Josh up front and Stewart, Martin, Eddie and Bailey operating in the flanks there were some decent spells of football.
And although we shaded the first half, you've got to give massive credit to Logan for his penalty save just before the break.
I thought we were done for when Dylan tripped their striker in our penalty area. But fair play to Logan he stood strong and pulled off a fantastic save. That save absolutely killed Winton psychologically and they really struggled in the second half.
Despite Richard and I not giving any kind of half time team talk (!!??), the boys sensed blood.
Some fantastic football, from Martin and George, saw Stewart go on the rampage, as he plundered another 4 in about 20 second half minutes, to take his tally to 5 and the team's to 7.
Unfortunately, the lads, and I know I sound like Alan Hansen, took their feet off the gas in the last 5 minutes and we conceded 3 to make the end of the game extremely nervy for us.
To let in those 3 goals was very disappointing for me and Richard and it slightly tarnished what was otherwise a good solid display, with some excellent passages of good passing football. When we play our football, properly, the chances do come. And luckily for us, Stewart was in clinical form.
Overall then a good victory, albeit closer run than it needed to be. MOTM went to Martin who supplied a breathtaking pass in to the penalty area, which was seized upon by an eager and alert Eddie to score his second of the season. Good work everyone!
