- MONTON SPORTS V TORNADOES
Saturday 19th September, KO 11am, Welbeck Road, League.
For their first competitive fixture of the new season, the Tornadoes travelled to Welbeck Road to face our old friends, Monton sports, in the League.
On what was essentially a cricket pitch the Tornadoes, once again, against a very good side, put in a extremely composed and disciplined display.
Although both teams initially found the pace of the ball quite hard to get to grips with, due to the novelty of playing on a pitch with normal length grass, they both soon settled down and started to play with some rhythm.
Playing downhill in the first half the boys soon built up some momentum and for my money definitely created the more chances.
For the third game in a row the defensive unit were vigilant, unified and disciplined and it's this maturity that is giving us the platform to go on and realistically compete in this division!
With our opponents being virtually nullified by George and the defensive unit it was then left to our midfield trio and striker to put pressure on to Monton's goal.
Thus it was gratifying to see several good chances being made by us, before Oscar executed a terrific free kick to see us end the half 0 - 1 up.
Playing uphill in the second half, we probably started to lose our shape a bit as well as a bit of our energy. However, the boys kept going and making chances as well as keeping Monton shut out.
Unfortunately, it couldn't last and with a decent, well placed effort from outside the area, Monton did equalise.
Despite this we kept going and I must say I thought we were terribly unlucky not to grab a winner.
Overall, I thought we were the slightly better team and we definitely created more clear cut chances than them.
The lads, to a man, all put a shift in! The back 3 mostly stayed in shape and did their jobs well. George, in that lonely berth in front of the defence, paced himself magnificently and did everything that was asked of him. The midfielders gave us forward momentum, I just would have liked to have seen more passing from the wide men and the ball being moved to a team mate a bit quicker. The strikers, despite some interesting positional play at times, did give their all and always made the effort. And ultimately that's what we all want to see, good honest endeavour.
This week's MOTM though had to go to Jack, who's concentration was terrfic. For long spells he never saw the ball yet when the ball came in to danger areas he was out off his line, bravely clearing or snuffing out the danger.
Also, I think Stewart deserves a very special mention. Normally we are praising him for his goal scoring exploits, but on Saturday he showed his true worth to the team when he flung himself at two efforts in succession. With Jack stranded, and the Tornadoes under extreme pressure, and the ball pinging around in our penalty area, Stewart surely stopped two goal bound efforts.
