- BARR HILL ACES V TORNADOES
Wednesday 14th September, Duchy Road, KO 6pm, Friendly.
As the evenings begin to draw in it's always good to squeeze in a mid-week friendly, just before the proper hostilities commence.
Unfortunately, for us, this was not a gentle trot out in the park on an early autumn evening. On the contrary, it had all the tension and needle of a league decider.
Thankfully, apart from a 'few misdemeanors', from both teams, we showed some tremendous character to score, keep scoring, keep creating chances and ultimately secure a draw.
That we won the penalty shootout is neither here nor there. This game had all the importance for me as the Community Shield, or the UEFA Super Cup, that is nothing, nada!
What was good was that we battled in the game, showed great character, took most of our chances and took 4 excellent penalties. Even better too was Jack in the shootout. Exceptional keeping!
The only thing that I didn't enjoy was conceding 6 goals and therefore, if we are to progress this season, we need to be tighter at the back. That means tactical and formation discipline and midfielders tracking back. I say this in every team talk I do. Defensive work is just as important as attacking work and yet I see players walking, when we're getting over run. When I ask why they're not tracking back they say they're tired. That's why Wayne wants them to run and sprint in training. If fitness improves so does game performance, so does concentration, so does acceleration.
For this season, I want us to work on fitness and defensive awareness/responsibility.
Back to the game: Josh, Jay and Radwan all scored a brace apiece and they were all great goals.
