- Gutsy Display By Beechy Ladies Goes Unrewarded
On Sunday 3rd April 2022 Beechy Ladies produced a real gutsy performance in their Division One Cup Semi-Final home game with Mancunian Unity.
Despite missing three key-players Beechy's display throughout the whole ninety minutes was totally superb and a 4-0 winning score line flattered Mancunian Unity. Beechy were soon having to defend as Unity attacked straight from the kick-off and Sophie Addison, Kirsten Elrick and Megan Mirfield were quickly involved in the action. Amie Barratt who worked hard in her main strikers role almost hit the target after a neat move between Becky Topping and Monique Pollard. The visitors went close on a couple of occasions to an early goal but great defending by Megan Mirfield denied an effort by Unity's No2 then the visitors No17 hammered the ball off target. The hard working Rosie Moorcroft playing on the left wing forced a corner which nearly earned Beechy the lead then when play switched to the other end a shot by Unity's No25 hit the post.
Beechy's keeper Alice Mosley made a great save pushing the ball onto the post before Shauna Smith booted it out of the danger zone. A neat piece of skill from Aimee Greenwood set-up a chance for Becky Topping who's half volley deflected off a Unity defender for another Beechy corner. Both Aimee Armsden and Monique Pollard produced several excellent ball winning tackles in the midfield area as Beechy maintained a hard working philosophy. A header by Aimee Armsden just missed the target after another pinpoint corner from Kirsten Elrick and a minute later when Mancunian Unity mounted another counter-attack Sophie Addison made defending look easy when under pressure. The visitors took the lead in the 35th minute and briefly Unity had a greater share of the ball but Beechy's back four remained well organised.
As Beechy strived to find an equaliser both Amie Barratt and Aimee Armsden went close to making it 1-1 just before half time. Julie Ward replaced Rosie Moorcroft at the start of the second half and when Mancunian Unity made a fast start after the break their No15 forced a fine fingertip save from Alice Mosley. Two successive corners again taken by Kirsten Elrick created chances for Beechy prior to Unity going 2-0 up and suddenly Kirsten, Shauna Smith, Megan Mirfield and Julie Ward faced some heavy pressure as the visitors attacked with real intent. A breakaway move resulted in Unity taking a 3-0 lead after seventy five minutes and following a couple of fine saves from Alice Mosley Unity added their fourth goal in the closing stages of the tie.
