- Ladies Back In Action With Cup Victory
Beechfield United Ladies Team were delighted to be back playing again after the enforced lockdown and resumed their fixtures in the Greater Manchester Womens League. (11/4/2021)
Beechy will only play league group games during the remaining weeks of this season and they enjoyed a winning return with a 5-0 away victory over Heyside Ladies in Group C. Before the match both teams and officials observed a minutes silence following the death of HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh. From the kick-off Beechy attacked down the left flank and forced a corner and Mia Pemberton's flag kick set-up a chance for Nicola Campion who just missed the target. After six minutes a throw-in taken by Shauna Smith found Stacy Partridge and her forward pass was controlled by Crystal Barker who's effort flashed wide of the post. Soon under pressure Heyside Ladies found it difficult to get out of their own half and had trouble keeping hold of the ball allowing Beechy to launch another attack and Nicola's pass onto Becky Topping saw the latter shoot just wide.
Beechy took the lead in the 9th minute following a good passing move again between Nicola and Becky who this time made no mistake when she fired the ball low past the keeper. Sixty seconds later Mia Pemberton won possession on the left wing and cutting inside hammered a shot from sixty yards which sent the ball flying over the keeper for the second goal. Heyside Ladies continued to struggle in an attempt to get into the game as Beechy piled on the pressure and after yet another corner Stacy Partridge sent a thunderous drive just wide. The overworked Heyside keeper who was the busiest player on the pitch came to her teams rescue again when she managed to save efforts on target by Nicola, Becky and Aimee Greenwood. On the half hour mark the hosts created an attacking flurry which forced Beechy keeper Abi Thirsk into action and she responded with a couple of smart saves.
Play quickly moved back into Heyside's half which resulted in Beechy forcing a corner and Stacy sent a great ball into the area for Nicola Campion who made it 3-0. Heyside were constantly using the roll-on-roll-off substitution rule in an attempt to slow down Beechy's relentless attacks but they got little joy from their plan. Mia Pemberton took a free kick from just outside the area firing the ball straight at the keeper and from the rebound Stacy Partridge went close to increasing Beechy's lead then Stacy took the next free kick but sent the ball over the crossbar. Close to half time Heyside enjoyed more of the ball and the hosts No14 started to cause a few problems but Bethany Hill and Shauna Smith remained rock solid in the middle of the back four.
At the start of the second half Beechy made a couple of changes when Sian Anderson who had a solid game and Mia Pemberton were replaced by Hannah Walker at left back and Emily Walmsley on the wing. Straight from the restart there was a chance for Crystal Barker to get amongst the goal scorers but Beechy's midfield star sent the ball off target. An error from the Heyside keeper saw her kick the ball directly at Stacy who volleyed it back into the area and Becky nearly turned it into the empty net. The hosts started to get a better foothold in the game and Abi Thirsk was forced to produce a great save then Heyside won a corner which led to a decent chance for one of their forwards who knocked the ball wide. In the 67th minute Beechy added goal number four when after racing onto a pass down the left flank Emily Walmsley skipped past two opponents and from inside the area drilled the ball past the keeper.
Sarah Hobson took over from Aimee Greenwood then a few minutes later Mia replaced Hannah Walker who was struggling with her breathing. Sophie Addison who had a good game in defence finally got her reward when she pushed forward again to join another attack and ended the move when she completed the scoring with Beechy's fifth goal. The hosts voted Stacy Partridge as their Player of the Match while the choice of Beechy's Manager and coach was Crystal Barker. Beechy's next game will be at home on Sunday 18th April when their opponents will be Hyde United Ladies.
