POSTED: April 18 2023 13:17:50 By Keith Long - Thunder Win Thrilling Double-Header Play-Off

In their first season in the Salford & Districts Junior Football League Beechfield United U/8's Thunder are on the verge of a Major Trophy success.

*Following a double-header play-off THUNDER earned their spot in the Supplementary Cup final after victories over Salford United Juniors and Wythenshawe Milan. In typical Beechy fashion Thunder made hard work for themselves against Salford United when they conceded two goals in the opening four minutes. A slight defensive mistake gave Salford the lead then Beechy were up against it after their opponents added their second goal. But Thunder rallied superbly and an effort by Brayden Taylor hit the post as Beechy created some strong attacking football. Arguably Thunder's best goal of the season reduced the arrears when Brayden beat two Salford players before delivering a great cross for Harley Cosgrove-Newby to score via a volley into the corner of the net. Brayden was involved again when during another solo run was hacked down and from the resulting free kick Sonny Phillips hammered the ball high into the net. Beechy pushed and pushed but they just couldn't find a match winning goal in normal time leaving the teams to face a penalty kick decider. Thunder won the shoot-out during which Sonny and Isaac Fleet-Alden scored from the spot and goalkeeper Hugo Balogun made two great saves.

*A tough second game was expected because Wythenshawe Milan had beaten Thunder twice earlier in the season. Following their match instructions to a tee the Beechy Boys were immense throughout the game which finished goalless but notably Wythenshawe didn't have one shot on target. At the start of another penalty kick decider Sonny Phillips stepped up and his kick put Thunder ahead then Wythenshawe Milan's first attempt missed the target. As the tension mounted Brayden Taylor blasted the ball home to give Beechy a two goal advantage before Wythenshawe reduced the arrears. Hugo Balogun took what would have been the winning penalty only to fire his effort wide but almost immediately Hugo became Thunder's match winning hero when his excellent spot-kick save booked Beechy's place in the final and spark huge celebrations.
