- Excellent Display But Wrong Result
At home to Premier Division leaders Hindsford FC on Saturday 30th November 2019 Beechfield United 1st Team didn't deserve to suffer a 5-3 defeat after producing an excellent all-round ninety minute performance.
Forced to make a few late team changes United almost took an early lead after a curling cross into the area by Jamie Sinnott just failed to find a teammate. Beechy won a couple of free kicks and at the end of United's next attacking burst Kurtis Lee was judged offside on two occasions. Hindsford gradually found a good rhythm as they moved the ball around with real confidence and a shot on target by the visitors No9 was saved by Beechy's stand-in keeper Ethan Birds. Keeping the pressure on United's defensive quartet Hindsford grabbed the lead when their No7 was given far too much room to advance from midfield and add a smart finish for 1-0. Before they had chance to reorganise United found themselves 2-0 down following some poor defending after Hindsford had won another throw-in. But ninety seconds later Beechy reduced the arrears when Mike Rogerson won the ball via a neat interception and his accurate long pass was controlled by Daniel Coates who evaded a challenge by the Hindsford keeper before slotting the ball into the empty net.
More powerful attacking play from Hindsford demonstrated why they are currently top of the table and as Beechy were forced to deal with added pressure John Purcell was a key figure in an overworked back four. United never allowed their opponents to totally dominate possession and after forcing yet another corner Beechy were rewarded with an equalising goal. Craig Massey took the flag kick and curled the ball deep into the area and during a goalmouth scramble leading marksman Kurtis Lee got the final touch to send it into the net. In this very entertaining game both teams competed fiercely for every loose ball and Hindsford almost found a third goal when their No10 was left unmarked but following a cross from the right flank he headed the ball wide of the target. A couple of vital saves by Ethan Birds and top quality defending from United captain Mike Rogerson and Carl Ravenscroft kept Beechy on level terms. Efforts by the visitors No8 and No9 flew past the post and United's well used offside tactic continued to serve them well but in the 38th minute a Beechy move broke down and Hindsford via their No8 went 3-2 up.
Into the second half and a header by Louis Duff almost found its way past the keeper then at the other end of the pitch Ethan Birds produced a brilliant acrobatic save to deny the visitors No7 who had beaten the offside trap. The match retained a terrific pace and United looked more composed when in possession as they continually threatened to level the score. Jamie Sinnott had a half chance from just inside the area before on fifty eight minutes Beechy made it 3-3 after a cross from Louis Duff was volleyed home off the keeper by Kurtis Lee. Quickly getting back into their stride Hindsford forced United back into a defensive mode and rarely wasting possession the visitors created a glut of decent chances. An effort by Craig Massey dropped just over the crossbar prior to Hindsford taking a 4-3 lead following a free kick in the 78th minute. Substitute Ellis Carr was soon involved after making an appearance and he won Beechy a corner that led to a header by John Purcell curling past the post. United attacked non-stop in their quest for an equaliser but Hindsford ended Beechy's hopes of forcing at least a draw with their fifth goal on eighty three minutes.
