- Ladies Team Maintain Winning Streak
On Sunday 5th February 2023 Beechy Ladies kept themselves in the Greater Manchester Womens League Division 1 title race with a 6-0 away win over Mancunian Unity's Development Team.
*Despite Kick-Off being delayed by almost twenty five minutes Beechy who made a few team changes quickly got into their stride. Monique Pollard won the games first corner then following another surging run down the left wing Beechy's No6 fired the ball just off target. Good work by Becky Gregory set-up a chance for Julie Ward who's header on target bounced back into play off the crossbar. The hosts young team who had made a confident start briefly forced some vital defending from Kirsten Elrick, Megan Mirfield, Shauna Smith and Alice Mosley. Following another corner to Beechy an effort from Jess Lawson was cleared off the goalline during a goalmouth scramble.
Becky Gregory who had suffered a slight injury was replaced by Aimee Armsden who was soon involved in the midfield action alongside Stacy Partridge and Becky Topping. Beechy's back four continued to deal with the threat of Unity's long ball option and stand-in keeper Amie Barrett had a trouble free opening fifteen minutes. As they controlled the pace of the game Beechy maintained a constant flow of well crafted moves as they used the full width of the hosts Astroturf Pitch. Alice Mosley produced an excellent ball winning tackle and her first time pass sent Monique Pollard on another jinking run which led to a corner.
Unity's valiant defending continually frustrated Beechy's attempt to open the scoring and the hosts keeper made several fine saves before Beechy took the lead. The goal came following a free kick when Jess Lawson angled the ball onto Stacy Partridge who blasted it beyond the keeper. Alice Mosley and Monique Pollard combined again on the left and a hosts defender somehow diverted the ball for a throw-in. A long range effort from Unity's No18 was on target but Amie Barrett who was well positioned made a comfortable save. The hosts then had chances to equalise from free kicks but Kirsten, Megan, Shauna and Alice remained well organise and were able to deal with the threat.
Beechy increased their lead when Becky Topping won possession on the left flank and after displaying superb footwork Beechy's No10 fired the ball low into the net from the edge of the area. Mancunian Unity were awarded their first corner of the game after Megan Mirfield blocked an effort on target from the hosts No9. A good piece of defending by Julie Ward started a quick counter-attack and a pass from Jess Lawson set-up a chance for Monique Pollard who forced a save from the Unity keeper. As the second half got underway a swift passing move developed between Becky Topping and Stacy Partridge who's swerving effort was just off target.
Monique Pollard had a goal disallowed for apparant handball then a long range strike from Alice Mosley flew inches wide of the post. A superb well timed tackle by Shauna Smith outside the area ended a powerful solo run from her own half by the hosts No10. In the 51st minute Beechy went 3-0 up via Julie Ward who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net following a long throw-in by Jess Lawson. More great play involving Aimee Armsden, Stacy Partridge and Becky Topping helped keep the pressure on Unity's hard working defenders. After the ball bounced off a Unity player Jess Lawson made a darting run into the area but after winning possession couldn't add the required finish.
A corner taken by Stacy Partridge was met by Shauna Smith who's strong header almost found a way past the Unity keeper. Beechy's fourth goal arrived from a move involving Monique Pollard and Alice Mosley which led to Jess Lawson slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net for her eighteenth goal of the season. A deep cross from Monique Pollard was sent back into the area by Jess Lawson and the ball deflected off the unlucky hosts No28 and into the net for 5-0 in the seventy second minute. An effort by Stacy Partridge was cleared off the goalline as Beechy created a glut of chances and more resolute defending from Mancunian Unity briefly denied Beechy their sixth goal.
Following a corner in the 81st minute a shot on target by Amie Barrett who was now playing in midfield was blocked but the ball rebounded to Aimee Armsden who with her left foot volleyed it past the keeper from close range to complete the scoring. Alice Mosley was named Player of the Match. Beechy's next Division 1 fixture on Sunday 12th February is a home game against AFC Stockport Lionesses.
