- Ladies Team Beaten By League Leaders & The Weather
Weather conditions were horrendous when Beechy Ladies lined-up for their Greater Manchester Womens League Division 1 away game against top of the table team Mancunian Unity on Sunday 6th February 2022.
*In a game of two halves Beechy lost the match 4-2 but after trailing 4-0 at half time the Ladies fought back superbly in the second half and producing a dynamic performance were rewarded with two brilliant goals. Beechy created an early attack involving Rosie Moorcroft, Aimee Greenwood and Becky Topping then keeper Alice Mosley dealt confidently with a free kick to the home team. Mancunian Unity took the lead in the 4th minute with a goal from their player wearing the No25 shirt who after creating a solo run fired the ball low into the net. Stacy Partridge, Becky Topping and Amie Barratt worked hard in midfield to win possession as Beechy attempted to created some positive attacking moves against a gale force wind. With the wind in their favour Mancunian Unity went close to increasing their lead as they forced Beechy's back four Kirsten Elrick, Shauna Smith, Megan Mirfield and Monique Pollard to defend deep in their own half.
Mancunian Unity went 2-0 up after ten minutes following a free kick when with the help of a deflection off a Beechy player defender the hosts No8 fired the ball home during a goalmouth scramble. Alice Mosley made a couple of fine saves in quick succession while a few minutes later Amie Barratt supplied a great through ball onto Aimee Greenwood who had strayed into an offside position. An effort by Stacy Partridge was dealt with by the Unity keeper just before Beechy made their first substitution when Sophie Addison replaced Aimee Greenwood. Megan Mirfield won the ball with a well timed tackle and quickly sent the ball onto Amie Barratt who's pass found Sophie Addison who forced the hosts keeper to concede a corner. The strength of the wind continually blew the ball off the pitch and judging it's bounce on the artificial surface was an added problem for the players.
Beechy conceded a third goal in the twenty third minute be responded with a positive attack involving Becky Topping, Rosie Moorcroft and Aimee Armsden. Following a free kick to Mancunian Unity Stacy Partridge won possession and her pinpoint pass set-up a chance for Amie Barratt who went close to scoring when her low drive hit the post. The hosts continually threatened to add to their goal tally following another attacking surge forcing more heroic defending from Kirsten, Megan, Shauna and Monique while Alice was constantly in action making two terrific saves prior to Mancunian Unity adding their fourth goal just before half time. Facing a tough task Beechy made a couple of tactical changes at the start of the second with Bethany Hill moving to a left sided defensive position and Aimee Greenwood replacing Aimee Armsden.
The hosts still ejoyed a decent share of the ball but gradually Beechy began to get a tighter grip on the game and looked a greater threat going forward. A surging run down the right wing by Kirsten Elrick forced a throw-in from which Becky Gregory fired a half volley just off target. Beechy reduced the arrears with a superb goal by Sophie Addison who displayed amazing footwork and sheer determination as she forced her way past three Unity defenders before adding a decisive finish. The goal boosted Beechy's confidence and Amie Barratt went close via two right footed efforts, both Monique Pollard and Aimee Greenwood forced successive corners and Becky Topping curled the ball just wide of the target following a free kick. The hosts continued to put pressure on Beechy's back four but terrific defending from Kirsten, Shauna, Megan and Bethany had to be admired.
Replacing Aimee Barratt was Emily Walmsley who was soon playing a major part in Beechy's second half performance. Beechy kept creating chances following more positive attacking soccer and after Alice Mosley had made an excellent save play switched back to the other end of the pitch. Beechy's second goal arrived when the ball was at the feet of Stacy Partridge who produced a stunning finish from twenty five yards when she hammered it beyond the keeper. Both teams created a few counter-attacks during the closing stages of the game and Beechy almost got another goal but Sophie Addison fired the ball wide following a fine pass from Becky Topping. On Sunday 13th February Beechy have a home game against Droylsden Ladies.
