- Sat Morn Senior Team League Round-Up
After almost seven weeks without a game in the Manchester Saturday Morning Football League Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team were back in action on the 29th January 2022.
*Beechy were away to Brownley Albion who were sitting in mid-table following some mixed results and after making a sluggish start United conceded the opening goal from a corner. Starting the second half in the same fashion Beechy struggled to retain possession and guilty of more sloppy defending gifted Brownley Albion their second goal. Beechy's lack of game time was a major factor regarding their poor performance.
*United's next fixture of 2022 was at home against Hazel Grove who before the game occupied top spot in Division 1. Looking for an improvement after last weeks low-key display Beechy made a flying start when they took the lead through Danny Alder who scored with a header following a corner. Despite being the better team throughout the first half Beechy would like to have been more than one goal ahead at half-time. Hazel Grove's overall performance improved after the break and the visitors pushed hard for an equaliser which came from the penalty spot. Beechy goalkeeper Chris Pollock unluckily brought down the Hazel Grove striker who made it 1-1 from the resulting spot-kick.
Almost immediately United hit back and regained the lead when top-goalscorer Wes Pierce supplied a decisive finish after a pinpoint cross from Scott Foulds. With ten minutes remaining Hazel Grove equalised for a second time when Beechy failed to clear the ball out of the danger zone. United should have won this game but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw.
*Seven days later United faced New Moston Rangers away who had taken over as new Division 1 leaders. Making the worst possible start Beechy found themselves a goal down within just a few minutes after failing to deal with a set-piece. However United soon recovered following the early setback and as they dominated the game were rewarded with an equalising goal on the half hour mark via Matthew McCusker. (HT 1-1) In the second half United continued to dictate the pace of the game and Scott Foulds who was causing New Moston all sorts of problems was extremely unluckly not to find the back of the net on a couple of occasions.
Eventually Beechy retook the lead when the in-form Danny Alder broke through the hosts defence and added a fine finish to put United 2-1 up. The game turned on it's head when United conceded two own goals and were down to ten players following a sin bin offence. As they continually worked hard to get back on level terms Beechy just couldn't find another goal to force at least a draw and lost the game 3-2. There were lots of positives to take from this performance and United's best chance of Silverware this season starts in three weeks time when they are involved in the Manchester Evening News Cup.
