- United Legend Scores Match Winning Goal
In the Manchester Saturday Morning Football League Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team extended their unbeaten sequence to eight games. Beechy's only defeat since October 2016 came in the MCFA Saturday Amateur Cup. Beechy legend Andy Lord who is playing in his nineteenth consecutive season scored United's second goal that proved to be the match winner. For their latest First Division league fixture United travelled to play Manchester Medics and on a bitterly cold day quickly took control of the match. Beechy created some excellent periods of free flowing football but they had to wait until the half hour mark before taking the lead. A corner caused a goalmouth scramble and a teammate calmly set-up the chance for Daniel Eckersley who was positioned on the edge of the area and he obliged with an accurate finish for 1-0. Still holding their one goal lead as the second half began United continued to control the game and didn't appear to be under pressure until the 60th minute.
Following a rash challenge outside the area Manchester Medics were awarded a free kick and the ball was despatched into the net despite a brave effort from the Beechy keeper. In the 80th minute United got their second goal that eventually guaranteed a 2-1 victory. During an excellent piece of play the ball broke free to Andy Lord who was in a good position supporting the midfield and forwards and he fired the ball low into the bottom corner of the net from twenty yards. Man of the Match was Damion Whitbread who was outstanding throughout the game creating numerous chances going forward and continually breaking up the oppositions play defensively. It was great to see Max Leonard back in the team and he deserved a goal following a solid performance.
