Boothstown U11 Hornets versus Beechfield Utd U11 Tornadoes Supplementary Cup 15/2/2025

Today was the first match of the Supplementary Cup. The game started in a cagey manner with few chances for either side. Beechy's defence held firm until midway through the first half when a Boothstown counter attack saw their striker 1 on 1 with our keeper Ty Dobson, and slotted it past him to take the lead. We looked dangerous going forward however in particular on the left with Harry Middleton showing some sublime touches throughout and linking up well with Grayson Evans and we were unfortunate not to score in the first half. Just before half time was the first of many controversial moments. We felt hard done by when Boothstown were awarded a corner despite the ball seemingly coming off their player last. From the corner the ball broke to them on the edge of the box and a clean low strike saw Boothstown go in two goals up at the break.

We knew we had to be more direct in the 2nd half and get the ball to Harry more who was having a great game. We were at it from the off in the 2nd half, a superb effort from Harry was tipped onto the bar. We continued to press and Harry linked up well with Grayson who finished superbly to bring the score back to just one goal in arrears. Beechy were completely dominant and continued to attack. We should have equalised following a scramble from a corner, but it wasn't long before the equaliser came. Harry was again involved, getting the ball through to Dawood Fakeeh who crossed for Grayson to slot home his 2nd of the match.

After our equaliser Boothstown were again on the front foot but our defence held firm. With about 10 minutes left Boothstown got a free kick about 20 yards from goal and it was executed perfectly by the Boothstown player, right into the top corner. An exceptional free kick to be fair and Boothstown led again. Shortly after yet another controversial moment. Beechy were screaming for a penalty when our shot struck the arms of the Boothstown defender in a high, unnatural position. Despite the strong appeals no penalty was given and Boothstown literally raced up the other end on the counter to slot home and extend their lead Literally 15 seconds passed between the penalty shout and Boothstown's fourth goal, and Beechy were deflated. We didn't give up however and continued to press, before the 3rd huge controversial moment of the match, when Boothstown were themselves awarded a penalty for handball, despite the arm being in a natural position at the side of the body. Beechy players and coaches again were furious, especially after our much more obvious penalty earlier in the match wasn't given. The penalty was scored, Boothstown got a fifth goal and this was how it finished.

It was a great game of football played in the right spirit despite the controversy and congratulations to Boothstown on the win. Nothing went our way today and we were on the wrong end of all the huge calls in the match, so it was really tough on the players who were devastated at the end. If we play like this in the coming weeks we'll start getting victories I'm sure.

Some great performances today, Reuben McCormick was excellent at the back and played some great passes forward to start our attacks. Grayson Evans got a brace and was a pest all match. But today's POTM had to go to Harry Myddleton who was excellent all game with some sublime touches, runs and link up play. Really unlucky today. We go again next week!
