- Goals Galore As Beechy Ladies Go Five Unbeaten
In the Greater Manchester Womens League Beechfield United Ladies played their first game of 2018 but it was a low-key affair when they met Crompton FC Ladies at Salford Sports Village. The visitors gave a creditable display but Beechy were able to secure an easy victory and with a better goal difference they remained top of the Division 1 table. Inside the opening three minutes United had created a few clear-cut chances and one effort from Natasha Herity hit the crossbar. Crompton Ladies relied heavily on the agile goalkeeper who was soon in action making numerous fine saves. At the end of a rare attack by the visitors their player wearing the number fifteen shirt saw her long range effort drift wide of the target. Kim Holt supplied the initial pass that led to Becky Topping producing a tidy finish for the opening goal in the 9th minute. It quickly became 2-0 courtesy of Natasha Herity then both Julie Ward and Sophie Wainwright forced two acrobatic saves from the overworked Crompton keeper before Stacy Partridge added the third goal.
Another scarce positive forward move from Crompton Ladies created a chance for their number seventeen who's shot on target was easily dealt with by Beechy keeper Rachel Howarth. Becky Topping fired home goal number four as United dominated possession then Jennifer Mutch was denied a goal via a stunning save by the visitors star player following a neat piece of play from Krystal Haywood. On thirty five minutes Sophie Wainwright made it 5-0 then a few minutes later a brilliant through ball by Kim Holt set-up Natasha Herity who scored the sixth goal. Jennifer Mutch delivered the perfect cross from the right wing and Stacy Partridge easily slotted the ball past the keeper giving Beechy a 7-0 lead at the break. Straight from the restart United were on the attack and the Crompton Ladies keeper was soon in action again. The ball appeared to have crossed the goal line after a shot by Jennifer Mutch but the referee ruled no goal.
He was in a good position again to award Beechy their eighth goal on 50 minutes courtesy of Player of the Match Becky Topping who completed her hat trick. Substitutes Joanna Szfranska and Debbie Wright who were introduced at the start of the second half were quickly involved while United's third substitute Sue Howard displayed intelligent use of the ball in most of the moves down the right flank. Virtually a spectator in the 2nd half Rachel Howarth made a comfortable save after Crompton's No11 had attempted to score from thirty yards. Debbie Wright produced a decisive finish for goal number nine after getting on the end of an inch perfect pass from Sue Howard. Beechy reached double figures via Joanna Szfranska who fired the ball low from outside the area and after taking a deflection it flew into the bottom corner of the net. Close to the final whistle a half volley from Debbie Wright beat the keeper but rattled the crossbar.
Squad for the Game: Rachel Howarth, Julie Ward, Krystal Haywood, Debbie Winterburn, Elina Parker, Kim Holt, Stacy Partridge, Becky Topping, Natasha Herity, Jennifer Mutch, Sophie Wainwright, Sue Howard, Debbie Wright, Joanna Szfranska.
