POSTED: January 17 2024 19:05:40 By Keith Long - Winning Start to 2024 for Sunday Open Age Team

On 7th January 2024 Beechfield United Sunday Open Age Team were back in action following a five week lay off.

*Beechy were away to AFC Mighty Mancs in the 2nd Round of the Memorial Cup and after the teams had shared a 3-3 scoreline at full time United won a penalty kick decider 5-3. Goalscorers for Beechy in normal time were Kai Mitchell, Kayson Mitchell and Jordan Hignett and successful with their spot-kicks were Liam Potter, Jack Keelan, Aaron Keenan, Jordan Hignett and Kai Mitchell.

*Seven days later securing an 8-1 home win over Unicorn Athletic resulted in United riding high on top of the Manchester Amateur Sunday League Division 2 table. In cold and frosty conditions Beechy made a fast start against Unicorn and Jack Keelan's accurate long pass found Aaron Keenan who won United their first throw-in. A solo run by Kai Mitchell engineered a move on the left wing involving Sam-Watton O'Brien then Mikey Moran and Kayson Mitchell linked in a neat one-two and the Unicorn keeper was forced to save an effort from Kai. United's three man defence Jack Keelan, Liam Potter and Jordan McNuff confidently dealt with the visitors rare counter-attacks though in the 7th minute the Unicorn No11 found himself with a half chance but he fired the ball off target. Keeping the pressure on their opponents Beechy opened the scoring in spectacular style when in the 13th minute Kai Mitchell with a goal of the season contender spotted the Unicorn keeper out of position and fired the ball over his head into the net from sixty yards.

Five minutes later United doubled their lead though on this occasion the visitors keeper gifted Kai Mitchell a much easier finish for 2-0. Sam Watton-O'Brien almost forced the ball into the net following a swift move between Aaron Keenan and Josh Reynolds prior to Beechy taking a 3-0 lead. Liam Potter, Mikey Moran, Kayson Mitchell and Jordan McNuff were all involved in a superb quick passing move and after a pinpoint cross from Josh Reynolds the ball deflected off a Unicorn defender and into the net. Producing a few threatening attacks Unicorn Athletic managed to reduce the arrears after slack defending by United gifted the visitors their consolation goal. Unicorn's lively No17 continued to create numerous mazy solo runs but his idea to win the game single handedly was foiled by brilliant defending from Jack, Liam and Jordan. Beechy made a couple of tactical changes late in the first half when Kieran Savage and Jake Wilkinson came off the bench. United's keeper Ben Sykes-Baines continued to enjoy a fairly easy opening forty five minutes but so far this hadn't been a totally dominant United display.

After the break Jack Winstanley-Potter replaced Sam Porter who'd had a fairly quiet first half and Jack quickly adapted to the pace of the game. United suddenly stepped up a gear and an effort from Kayson Mitchell hit the post then Mikey Moran attempted to score via a couple of overhead kicks. Jake, Mikey and Liam all featured in the move that ended with Kai Mitchell putting Beechy 4-1 up when he completed his hat-trick. Shortly after an inch perfect pass from Jack Keelan was controlled by Kai who's fierce shot was misjudged by the Unicorn keeper and Man of the Match Liam Potter easily netted the rebound for the fifth goal. The vsitors struggled to deal with United's all-round strength and ability and Beechy cruised into a 6-1 lead in the 65th minute thanks to a decisive finish by Jack Winstanley-Potter and Unicorn's task got even tougher when they were reduced to ten players following a red card incident.

More powerful attacking from United created chances galore and Howard Longsden and Josh Reynolds combined to set-up Aaron Keenan who was denied by the visitors keeper but Aaron was eventually rewarded when he beat the offside trap and latching onto Liam's defence splitting pass netted goal number seven. Josh and Howard combined through midfield and the latter saw his effort curl wide of the target and Beechy didn't add the finish to more decent chances until the 86th minute. With his fourth goal of the game Kai Mitchell wrapped up the scoring via another top-class finish following Jake Wilkinson's excellent through ball.
