*Beechfield United Storm U8's v AFC Urmston Meadowside Lions*
Beechfield Storm took it to an unprecedented 12 months today since their last draw or loss in the SDFL with an accomplished performance against an ever improving Urmston Meadowside team.
Game started with Alfie in net, Fred and Reggie at the back with Henry (captain) and Imad manning the wings
Both teams looking a bit disjointed at first with a couple of flash shots saved well by Alfie, one looking destined for the bottom corner but Alfie curled and smothered the ball. Henry took on initial creative duties skipping to the left touchline a couple of times, flashing a ball across which just eluded Imad on both occasions.
This time Henry took the ball on the right, found his man who struck & the balls was handled by the defender. Imad stepped up and absolutely powered it in to the back of the net from the resulting penalty.
With George’s introduction giving Freddie, who after yesterday looked like he had gone a round with Tyson fury, licence to go forward won the ball high up the field and finessed it into the bottom right corner. Shortly after in an identical position Fred on the left found Henry with a pinpoint pass taking out 3 players; Henry curling it into that bottom right with his first touch.
Having had a gruelling game against Stockport County’s academy team on Friday Beechy started to tire with a couple of corners coming close & Meadowside did make their breakthrough. Following confusion between midfield and defence an Urmston players was released and arrowed a ball past Alfie in net.
Picking themselves up - Beechy came close to a fourth - Alfie’s distribution from goal was absolutely on point throughout the first half & split AFC Urmston with a pass to Imad on half way who took round his player and unfortunately his shot went wide.
As the second half started Beechy again looked a bit sluggish though chances came with Imad letting fly on a couple. Fred also coming from deep took a pot shot which was exceptionally saved by the goalie.
Vincent now in goal was called to make a clearance save though on second asking Beechy hadn’t learned from their mistake - a kick in unmarked allowed their striker to thunder the ball into the back of the net.
The goal woke storm up who started to look like the team of last year - immediately from the resulting kick off the ball went back to Fred - passed it straight down the line for Imad who raced down the wing and dropped it on the edge to Henry who played it past the goal keeper.
With Urmston on the attack the ball was won well by Alfie in defence who had it shuffled to George & he delivered a de Bruyne esq pass to Imad who, on his left foot made no mistake slotting into the net.
Storm really finished well after this - Reggie powering forward causing a great save from the keeper, Alfie took his distribution from his time in goal to the field and found Imad who’s shot was miraculously saved which looked destined for the top left. Imad did try to repay the favour with a swung cross with Alfie at the back post who couldn’t quite get his foot through it!
George who had been a sweeper at the back for the team today again took a second assist as he found a marauding Reggie, who’s left footed strike into the bottom corner was hit with venom.
Storm finished the game extremely well, looked back to normal in the second half and shook off those tired legs, showing real resilience & great team work.
MOTM:
Shout out from the team to Reggie who had a great game but also to Alf who played very well in goal & outfield. However the team all mentioned *George* who played his role exceptionally. Marshalled the defence imperiously, his speed on show stopping any breakaways, no nonsense defending and his passing unlocking the opponents on two occasions
