- Disappointied First Team Fail To Win Again
Despite a fairly impressive all-round display in their home game with Stockport Georgians a rather disappointed Beechfield United 1st Team suffered a sixth successive defeat on Saturday 26th January 2019. United twice held the lead in this Premier Division match but a debatable penalty and a brilliant third goal secured the visitors a 3-2 victory. Making one team change Beechy kicked-off with keeper Andrew Richardson replacing Rob Harrison and in overcast conditions there was an evenly balanced start this game. The Gregorians keeper made a smart save following an effort from Kurtis Lee then Andrew Richardson showed good handling after the visitors No9 attempted to score from close range. United created a couple of half chances before they took the lead in the 9th minute after Louis Duff won possession then sent Jamie Sinnott on a run down the right wing and the Beechy No9 delivered a superb curling cross that was met by Jordan Jones-Waite who added an excellent finish.
Gregorians came roaring back and quickly put the pressure onto United's defensive quartet Mike Phythian, Marcus Belcher, Luke Johnston and Carl Ravenscroft. The visitors forced their first corner after eighteen minutes and briefly Beechy were pinned in their own half and a great piece of defending by Marcus Belcher kept United ahead. United responded with some first-class counter-attacking soccer with both Chris Ferris and Steven Erskine at the forefront of numerous great moves through midfield. The action at times was of a frantic nature and after United survived another period of Gregorians pressure they almost added a second goal on the half hour. The ball was fired down the right flank by Mike Phythian onto Louis Duff who exchanged passes with Jamie Sinnott and curled the ball into the area where Kurtis Lee was waiting and he sent his header just over the crossbar. Another chance was on offer to Gregorians to draw level after a high booted clearance downfield was won by the visitors No10 but he blasted the ball wide of the target.
A few minutes later the ball was in the back of the Gregorians net but before he added the finish to a swift attack Kurtis Lee was judged to have fouled the visitors No5. Chances continually arrived at both ends as the teams continued to create an entertaining and highly competitive match. Once again the Gregorians No10 saw another effort miss the target and during the closing minutes of the first half Andrew Richardson made a couple of good saves as the visitors threatened to score on a few occasions. Shortly after the restart Gregorians were gifted an equaliser when the Beechy keeper somehow when appearing to have full control of the ball let it roll under his body and a visitors forward tapped it into the empty net. United were quick to try and rectify the genuine mistake after Louis Duff combined with Jordan Jones-Waite only for the latter to fire the ball over the angle of post and crossbar. But Beechy maintained a constant flow of quick and accurate passing moves and were rewarded in the 56th minute with a 2-1 lead.
Marcus Belcher made a brilliantly timed tackle and played a great pass down the right flank for Kurtis Lee and United's No7 produced a world class finish from the edge of the area. Despite regaining the advantage Beechy didn't fully control the match and were guilty of wasting possession far too easily. A dubious penalty to Gregorians in the 63rd minute resulted in the visitors getting back level and four minutes later a superb goal by Gregorians No6 proved to be his teams match winner. After soaking up more pressure from the visitors United created a period of controlled attacking play and Jamie Sinnott missed a great opportunity to equalise then Kurtis Lee saw a header on target win Beechy a corner that forced a goalmouth scramble but Gregorians survived and eventually celebrated their victory.
