- Local Derby Win For In-Form Reserves
At David Lewis Playing Fields Beechfield United Reserves hosted neighbours Moorside Rangers U21's team and extended their unbeaten run to nine games following a 3-1 victory.
Both teams contributed to a scrappy start that saw the game focused in midfield until United created their first real attack. Zach Booth delivered a twenty yard pass down the left flank for Danny Lee who let the ball bounce before he produced a superb lob over the keeper for the opening goal. Despite playing with an under strength team Beechy slowly got a tighter grip on this Division 5 fixture and took a 2-0 lead. Another attack down the left involved Danny Lee who won United a corner and Keenan Switzer's flag kick was met by central defender Deren Saunders who added a decisive finish. As they continued to exploit the space available on the left flank Beechy kept Rangers in defensive mode and just before half time United added their third goal. Receiving the ball in middle of the park Keenan Switzer with both time and space displayed a great piece of skill when he dinked the ball beyond the Rangers keeper.
Play became rather scrappy in the second half and as Beechy looked to add another goal were limited to just a few half chances. With fifteen minutes to go Moorside Rangers managed their first real shot of the contest but the ball ended up flying over the crossbar. But following another attack Rangers scored their consolation goal when from about ten yards a visitors forward fired the ball past Jason Rodgers. This was a disappointing moment for Beechy because their keeper had a reasonably quiet afternoon and if Rangers had ideas of causing a late upset they soon diminished. Operating with a 4-3-3 formation United produced an all-round solid performance and fully deserved their victory and the three points that moved them up to second place in the league table. Man of the Match was Danny Lee. (7/3/2020)
