- Good 2nd Half Earns Win For Ladies Team
On Sunday 9th May 2021 Beechfield United Ladies were in action against Boothstown Ladies and despite a low-key 1st Half display found their form in the 2nd half and won the game 5-1.
Boothstown kicked-off the match and were given a real boost when they took the lead in the 1st minute via a goal from their No4. Recovering from the setback Beechy were slow in getting their passing game into gear and had to wait until the 8th minute for their first real chance to equalise but Crystal Barker fired the ball wide of the target. Boothstown's No25 & No27 were involved in some great link-up play as the visitors enjoyed a greater share of the ball and United's central defender Bethany Hill rescued Beechy on one occasion with an excellent last ditch tackle. United's keeper Abi Thirsk showed her ability during another strong attacking surge from Boothstown and Beechy had to soak up some heavy pressure in the opening quarter hour. Both Mia Pemberton and Nicola Campion were just off target with their attempts to beat the visitors keeper following a couple of breakaway attacks.
Another solo run by Sophie Addison led to Beechy's equalising goal in the 31st minute when she won a corner and taking the flag kick was Mia Pemberton who curled the ball into the area which led to a goalmouth scramble and under pressure from Bethany Hill a Boothstown defender in an attempt to clear the ball kicked into the net. The visitors responded with some more positive attacking football again focused down the right flank and Emily Walmsley who was a candidate for Player of the Match produced some brilliant defending. Abi Thirsk continued to be the busiest of the two goalkeepers following more long range efforts from the visitors and two vital clearances from Shauna Smith and Bethany Hill kept it at 1-1 when the teams took a well earned half time break. Sian Anderson took over from Aimee Greenwood with Sophie Addison moving into a more forward position and Beechy looked more composed from the restart.
Stacy Partridge, Crystal Barker and Mia Pemberton combined in a move to set-up a good chance for Becky Topping who's shot on target forced a fine save from the Boothstown keeper. Crystal Barker continued to have an excellent game in midfield and after a quick 1-2 with Nicola Campion she almost put Beechy ahead then great play between Mia Pemberton and Sian Anderson resulted in Sophie Addison's effort curling just wide. Boothstown remained a huge threat on the attacking front but Beechy after stepping up a gear took a 2-1 lead thanks to superb skill by Mia Pemberton. Beechy's No18 held off a defenders strong challenge before delivering a great cross to the back of the area and Sophie Addison controlled the ball before firing it low into the net. The visitors were reduced to ten players following a red card incident handing Beechy an unexpected advantage in this League Group C encounter.
After a brief spell when Boothstown created a few decent counter-attacks which forced some solid defending from Beechy's back four United went 3-1 up in the 74th minute after winning another corner. Stacy Partridge swerved the ball into the area and Sophie Wainwright's close range effort hit the post but Crystal Barker slotted home the rebound. Three minutes later Beechy got their fourth goal after Play of the Match Sophie Addison displayed exceptional footwork before supplying a world class finish. Mia Pemberton completed the scoring when she easily flicked the ball past a Boothstown defender before hammering it from 25 yards over the keeper.
