- U/16's Tornadoes Just Fail To Do The Double
After being crowned Section C champions in the Bolton Bury and District League Beechfield United Under 16's Tornadoes were chasing a trophy winning double when they met Deerfold United in the final of the Players Cup. The match played on Sunday 28th May 2017 was originally scheduled for Manchester City's Academy ground but was switched to the home of Horwich St Marys. Beechy had won the league title by one point with Deerfold United finishing in second place so the cup final was always going to be a closely fought affair
The Tornadoes opened the scoring when an astonishing piece of skill by Kieran Alley set-up the chance for Kurtis Taylor who produced a nutmeg on the keeper from close range. Deerfold equalised after a mistake by the Beechy keeper but there was a suspicion of offside before the ball was slotted into the net. Then on the half hour mark following a free kick Deerfold took the lead and they were still 2-1 up at the break. After a goal from Joe Furlong put the Tornadoes back level in the second half Beechy had decent chances to score at least two more goals.
With fifteen minutes left to play Deerfold got what turned out to be a match winning third goal despite a Beechy defender clearly being pushed in the back during the move. Deerfold were reduced to ten players for the last ten minutes but despite a late attacking surge the Tornadoes couldn't find another goal and had to settle for the runners-up medals. According to Team Manager Chris Cottrill throughout the final Beechy created some stunning football plus there were some excellent individual performances.
