- Amateur Cup Success For Saturday Senior Team
Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team were recently involved in the Manchester FA's Saturday Amateur Cup and a Round 2 tie with Irlam Steel Reserves. On their 3G Astro Turf pitch at Salford Sports Village United who had a strong line-up on view were punished for a below-par display in the opening quarter hour. Following a unforced error by a Beechy defender Irlam Steel were gifted the lead but despite playing below their normal high standard United came close to getting back level.
Both Man of the Match Damon Whitbread and Kane Branigan got into good shooting positions to test the ability of the Irlam Keeper. The visitors forced another corner and following a goalmouth scramble Irlam Steel's number 8 got the vital touch on the ball to put his side 2-0 up on twenty one minutes. Beechy increased their work rate and after a great move involving Ian Black and Daniel Eckersley the ball was with Scott Foulds but he fired it wide of the target.
Two minutes later Roy Owen was inches away from reducing the arrears when his volley hit the post but United eventually got a goal back in the 29th minute when Wes Pierce produced a superb solo run and set-up Kane Branigan who hammered the ball into the corner of the net. After the goal Beechy played with more self-belief and starting to create a glut of chances deservedly found an equaliser. A move developed down the left flank and a deep cross into the area from Kane Branigan was misjudged by the Irlam keeper and Scott Foulds was left with an easy finish.
Irlam Steel made a confident start to the second half and their centre forward wasted an easy chance to put the visitors back in front. Finding their rhythm again United went 3-2 up after fifty nine minutes when Scott Foulds outpaced two Irlam defenders and his accurate low cross was met by Wes Pierce who scored from close range. Minutes later Irlam's number seven came close to getting the visitors back level. But United gradually dominated possession and keeping the pressure on their opponents added a fourth goal after sixty nine minutes. Scott Foulds produced another exciting solo run down the right wing and blasted the ball past a stranded keeper. In the last twenty minutes Beechy created more brilliant attacking soccer and should have increased their lead. In the next round of the competition United have been drawn at home again. On Saturday 5th November 2016 Beechy play Didsbury Reserves a team from the Lancashire and Cheshire Football League.
