- 85th Minute Match Winning Goal For Beechy Ladies
Back in action in the Greater Manchester Womens League Beechy Ladies were involved in the Challenge Cup on Sunday 7th November 2021.
Away to Swinton Ladies in Round One of the competition Beechy secured a 4-3 victory thanks to an 85th minute winning goal scored by Aimee Greenwood. A strong gusty wind failed to ruin an action packed tie which produced some good football and quality goals from both teams. Beechy kicked off the game and were quickly on the attack with Bechy Gregory and Monique Pollard combining in a promising move down the left wing. Two successive corners to Beechy forced some solid defending from the hosts then Nicola Campion produced a mazy run past three opponents before firing the ball just off target. Swinton Ladies created a few good moves down both flanks but Beechy's back four Kirsten Elrick, Bethany Hill, Sian Anderson and Monique Pollard confidently dealt with the early pressure.
Enjoying more of the ball in the opening ten minutes Beechy had a few half chances and on one occasion a pinpoint pass from Ashleigh Morris found Aimee Greenwood who's effort on target won Beechy their first corner. The hosts took the lead after they were awarded a generous direct free kick and the Swinton Ladies No5 curled the ball over Beechy's defensive wall and high into the net. A couple of crosses by Monique Pollard were dealt with by the Swinton Ladies keeper who was again in action saving an effort from Becky Topping after the ball had deflected to her off Stacy Partridge. Swinton Ladies No17 had a chance to double her teams lead prior to Beechy's equalising goal when Ashleigh Morris delivered a superb through ball and Becky Gregory brushed aside a defenders strong challenge before she added a decisive finish for 1-1 in the 22nd minute.
Against their hard working opponents at times Beechy struggled to play their normal passing game not helped by the uneven playing surface. Another neat piece of skill by Nicola Campion almost earned herself a goal but a valiant effort from the Beechy forward skimmed the crossbar. Another corner to Beechy arrived after a shot from thirty yards by Stacy Partridge tested the ability of the Swinton Ladies keeper. Stacy was then replaced by Sophie Addison who was immediately involved in the action when she created two surging runs down the right wing. What appeared to be an aimless long ball sent downfield was controlled by the Swinton Ladies No11 who moved into the area and hammered the ball at the target but Beechy keeper Holly Grimes responded with a brilliant save.
Kirsten Elrick's accurate pass found Sophie Addison in space on the right wing and Sophie set-up a chance for Nicola Campion who was just off target with her close range effort. Once again the uneven surface ruined some quick passing moves from Beechy and just before half time a great cross from Aimee Greenwood was blasted just over the crossbar by Monique Pollard. HT 1-1. Beechy made three changes at the start of the second half when Rosie Moorcroft, Emily Walmsley and Stacy Partridge replaced Ashleigh Morris, Nicola Campion and Aimee Greenwood. From the restart Swinton Ladies mounted an attack through the midfield but Beechy soon regained possession and a swift passing move between Rosie Moorcroft, Becky Gregory and Sophie Addison almost resulted in a goal.
Twice in quick succession Bethany Hill produced vital ball winning headers as the hosts continued to look dangerous via the counter-attack. Beechy went 2-1 up when Emily Walmsley won the ball with a well timed tackle before sending it forward onto Sophie Addison who outpaced two defenders and hammered it over the keeper into the roof of the net. The hosts No7 was just off target from close range and from the goal kick Beechy won a corner taken by Stacy who curled the ball into the area and a volley by Becky Topping hit the post. Jessica Jones replaced Monique Pollard and was soon working hard for Beechy who had a chance to increase their lead following a move between Rosie Moorcroft and Sophie Addison.
In the 63rd minute Swinton Ladies equalised though Beechy's defenders were adamant that the hosts No9 was in an offside position before she fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net. But within ninety seconds Beechy regained the lead thanks to a neat pass forward from Stacy Partridge and displaying sheer determination to win the ball was Sophie Addison who added a top-class finish. Becky Gregory, Becky Topping, Ashleigh Morris and Aimee Greenwood were back on the pitch as Beechy once again used the roll-on-roll-off substitution rule. Rosie Moorcroft had another chance to get herself a fully deserved goal after she controlled a pass from Ashleigh Morris. In the last fifteen minutes Emily Walmsley, Sian Anderson, Bethany Hill and Kirsten Elrick had to deal with some strong counter-atttacking from their opponents.
On eighty two minutes Swinton Ladies No5 won the ball in midfield and was allowed far too much time and space to advance forward and make it 3-3 thanks to a quality finish. But with a penalty shoot-out looming large Beechy were rewarded with their all important fourth goal when Player of the Match Sophie Addision forced her way into a position to cross the ball into the area and Aimee Greenwood slotted it into the bottom corner of the net. Both Bethany Hill and Stacy Partridge produced some great defending when Swinton Ladies created a late attacking surge.
