- 3-2 Away Win For Beechy Ladies
A hard working all-round performance earned Beechfield United Ladies a 3-2 away win following their Greater Manchester Womens League Division 1 away game with Bury FC Women.
*On a poor grass pitch Beechy dealt with some early pressure from the hosts before launching a few counter-attacks. A quick passing move on the right flank developed between Natasha Herity and Becky Topping who's accurate cross almost found Becky Gregory unmarked in the penalty area. Control of the ball was difficult on the uneven surface but despite playing up the slope Beechy still managed to create some positive passing moves. Following a few more quality attacks Beechy took the lead via top goalscorer Jess Lawson who added the finish after Amie Barratt had found a gap in the hosts defence. Bury FC created a few swift counter-attacks looking for an equaliser but there was some solid defending from Kirsten Elrick, Megan Mirfield and Julie Ward who made a great goalline clearance.
Beechy led 2-0 when a deep cross by Kirsten Elrick was missed by a hosts defender and the ball dropped perfectly for Aimee Greenwood who had both time and space to fire the ball home from close range. A few minutes elapsed before Bury FC reduced the arrears with a goal from their No9 though the ball appeared to go through a hole in the side of the net. Beechy suddenly faced added pressure as Bury FC introduced the long ball tactic and the hosts No10 missed a good chance after a move down the left wing. Sophie Addison replaced Kirsten Elrick and Beechy's substitute was quickly involved exchanging passes with Natasha Herity close to the touchline. Featured in most of the midfield action was Becky Gregory and she just failed to get the vital touch on the ball in the area following a corner by Jess Lawson.
Bury FC continued to create some well controlled attacks and Beechy keeper Joanna Szafranska produced some safe handling when under pressure. Making a confident start in the second half Beechy maintained their philosophy of playing attractive football no matter what the conditions were underfoot. Becky Gregory forced a save from the hosts keeper who was well positioned a couple of minutes later when dealing with a effort on target by Natasha Herity. Now operating in a more defensive role Stacy Partridge went on an amazing solo run from her own half skilfully leaving four Bury FC players in her wake. The energy sapping pitch failed to slow down the pace of the game and as the second half rolled on the hosts focused most of their attacks down the left wing.
Both Sophie Addison and Aimee Greenwood did their fair share of defending when the hosts threatened to get back on level terms but Beechy responed in the best possible way when they went 3-1 up in the 74th minute. Julie Ward won possession with a great ball winning tackle and Becky Topping kept the move going when she sent Jess Lawson racing clear and when inside the area Beechy's main striker hammered the ball beyond the keeper. But two minutes later Bury FC got their second goal when they forced a corner and following the flag kick in a crowded goalmouth the hosts No7 glanced a header into the net. An angled pass from Player of the Match Natasha Herity set-up a chance for Jess Lawson who fired the ball off target then Becky Topping saw her effort drift just past the post.
Megan Mirfield and Stacy Partridge produced some top-class defending and Joanna Szafranska made a vital reflex save as Beechy dealt with another period of pressure. A swift move involving Amie Barratt and Becky Topping resulted in another fine effort by the latter that forced a diving save from the Bury FC keeper. As they continued to display an excellent high level of committment Beechy were on the attack again in the closing minutes and shots by Becky Gregory and Natasha Herity went close to making it 4-2.
