- Beechy Topple The Division 1 Leaders
Following their first victory of the season Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team made it a quick winning double when they beat Division 1 leaders AFC Middleton on 6/11/2021.
Seven days earlier a 5-1 win over Heston FC had hopefully got Beechy's season back on track and against AFC Middleton a superb all-round performance earned United a 2-1 victory. AFC Middleton had won the previous fixture between the teams but Beechy were in a confident mood and determined to get revenge. Making his United debut was goalkeeper Brad Hosker who was soon in action making a confident save following an effort from the visitors No7. Danny Browne was involved in two slick counter-attacks and on one occasion Scott Foulds was just off target with a shot from inside the area. Both teams displayed good movement off the ball while in midfield United's Will Davidson was at the heart of Beechy's most prominent moves. Bako Aziz produced a brilliant ball winning tackle and his pass was controlled by Scott Foulds who's firece strike won Beechy their first corner. The visitors No8 had a fierce drive well saved by the Beechy keeper but overall United kept a good shape against the league leaders.
United's back four Tom Scott, Anthony Wallis, Adam Holt and Gary Wallis confidently dealt with a brief wave of Middleton attacks and Brad Hosker made another fine save after the visitors No10 had created space outside the area. A few overhit passes ruined some great counter-attacking from Beechy who hadn't troubled the Middleton before they took the lead. Marlon Barlow and Bako Aziz were involved in a brilliant move down the left wing and from about twenty five yards Kyle Mears hammered the ball low into the bottom corner of the net. Three minutes later AFC Middleton created another breakaway move and a well exectuted finish from the visitors No7 made it 1-1. Scott Foulds used his pace to get clear of a Middleton defender before he saw his effort hit the post following great play by Danny Browne who sustained an injury and was replaced by Wes Pierce.
The visitors rarely wasted possession and focused the majority of their attacks down the right flank but Beechy defended superbly and shortly before half time regained the lead. Rewarded for his excellent performance in midfield was Will Davidson who surged forward from midfield and his powerful strike took a slight deflection befor leaving the Middleton keeper flat footed. Quickly back on the attack at the start of the second half the visitors created a few decent chances but Beechy responded and in the 48th minute Wes Pierce set-up Marlon Barlow who's shot on target hit the crossbar. Adam Boakes replaced Bako Aziz and dropped deep to give support to Beechy's back four and Brad Hosker made two top-class saves to deny efforts from the visitors No8 and No7 just before United made another tactical change when Kyle Mears was replaced by Matty McCusker.
Both teams continued to serve up a feast of attacking football as they competed fiercely for possession in all areas of the pitch. Middleton's best player their No7 went close via a curling free kick and a header by the visitors No5 dropped over the crossbar following a corner. The visitors No12 produced several surging runs down the keft wing which caused a few problems for United's Tom Scott but Tom responed with some resolute defending. Wes Pierce, Matty McCusker and Adam Boakes combined in a terrific move and the latter was denied a goal after a well timed last ditch tackle by the visitors No4. Two great saves by Brad Hosker were vital in the last ten minutes as Beechy back four soaked up some heavy pressure.
A terrific solo run from Wes Pierce definitely deserved a better finish when the Beechy midfield star blasted the ball straight at the keeper. The action moved rapidly from end to end in the latter stages and added time only made for a tense finish. United's Man of the Match was Will Davidson who had previously been with the club in seasons 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 when he played for Beechy U/7's & U/8's Storm in the City of Salford Soccer League.
