League match
Beechfield Thunder v Irlam Junior's (Salford and Districts Junior League)
First league match today in the newly promoted Red Group for the Thunder boys and the opposition were Irlam Juniors who we lost a very close game too in the challenge cup, so revenge was in the air. Starting in goal was Bobby, Shammah/Elliot in defence with Ralph and José leading the attacking front. Thunder started the game brightly and we're looking to get José in on goal early on. Irlam's defensive line was looking solid as Ralph made some clever runs down the wing but he just couldn't get the run of the green in the final third. Bobby was called into action midway in the half making a couple of great saves to keep the score level. Irlam's structure was proving difficult to break down for Thunder's attacks whilst Elliot and Shammah were also proving a tough line to break for the Irlam attack. The introduction of Che and Finley gave Thunder an injection of pace but the first half would come to an end goalless. Into the second half and both teams were working on breaking the deadlock and it was Irlam who went into the lead from a free shot inside the Thunder box. Gio came into the Thunder midfield and instantly made an impact breaking up the Irlam run of play and creating a chance for José who bore down on the Irlam goal and fired in his shot into the top corner. With momentum turning in Thunder's favour it was Gio again who maraudered through the Irlam midfield and played an outstanding pass that was signed, sealed and delivered for José to deliver into the back of the Irlam net. Irlam sensing a defeat began to pressure the Thunder defence who held on well but unfortunately with only the last minute to go the equaliser came after the Thunder boy's were caught sleeping at the back leading to an unchallenged finish.
A big improvement from the Thunder boys today who were unfortunate not to come away with the win against an evenly matched team in Irlam.
Man of the Match - Gio, he was superb in his work rate today which ultimately led to both Thunder's goals with a pass of the season contender for Thunder's second goal.
