- Sunday Open Age Team Secure 5-1 Victory
After three weeks without an official game Beechy's Sunday Open Age Team were back in action and secured a 5-1 victory following their Division 2 home game with Burton Road.
*On a cold and frosty morning both teams made a steady start in this Manchester Amateur Sunday League Division 2 fixture on the 4g Astro Pitch and United's back four were soon busy dealing with the visitors early attacking threat and both Liam Potter and Kieran Savage made excellent ball winning tackles. A superb long pass by Jack Keelan found Kai Mitchell who won Beechy's first corner then a great run by Josh Reynolds saw his swerving cross dealt with by the Burton keeper. Moving the ball with confidence the visitors created chances and Burton's No14 got into a good shooting position to force a save from United keeper Ben Sykes-Baines. Beechy forced another corner following a superb move involving Mikey Moran and Kayson Mitchell and the visitors continued to frustrate United with some dogged defending. In the midfield both Jake Wilkinson and Howard Longsden worked hard to win possession in this key area while upfront Lewis Culf who made several great runs off the ball forced a double save from the visitors keeper. Several controversial decisions threatened to totally ruin the game as play switched rapidly from end to end and Burton went close to taking the lead on several occasions. United's Manager Ashley Sykes-Baines who earlier came off the substitutes bench supplied a great through ball onto Kai who neatly set-up Lewis who's effort just missed the target. HT 0-0.
Burton Road kicked-off the second half and after a brief spell when they wasted possession Beechy got a much tighter grip on the game. Following a mazy solo run by Jake Wilkinson United had a goal disallowed when Mikey Moran was just offside before he slotted the ball into the net. Liam, Jack and Kieran dealt with a few attacking flurries from the visitors before Beechy took the lead in the 55th minute. A left footed finish by Lewis Culf gave the keeper no chance after some great individual play and pinpoint cross from Jake Wilkinson. United made another substitution when Jordan McNuff was thrust into the action and shortly after Beechy went 2-0 up when from a corner taken by Lewis rising highest in the area was Jake Wilkinson who headed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. There were incidents galore throughout the second half but after United had stepped up a gear they were guaranteed winners of this game. Josh Reynolds added a top-class finish to another quality counter-attack for goal number three then a superb pass from Liam Potter set-up Lewis Culf who made it 4-0 after he lobbed the ball over the keeper. In the 82nd minute Burton Road's defence was prised open again when after keeper Ben's long kick downfield Kai Mitchell kept the moving going and his pass allowed Lewis Culf to complete his hat-trick with the fifth goal. The visitors consolation goal in the closing stages came from the penalty-spot.
