- County Cup Victory For Sat Morning Seniors
Taking a break from their Manchester Saturday Morning League duties Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team were involved in the Manchester FA Amateur Cup and Beechy who had home advantage for their 2nd Round tie against Deans FC booked their place in the next round thanks to a 6-0 victory. Making his debut for United was Matthew Meacher who took up the role of left back and he was soon involved as the visitors made a confident start to the match. At the end of United's first real attack Matthew McCusker was presented with a chance but his half volley flashed wide of the target. Deans forced the games first corner but Beechy easily dealt with any possible danger as the ball bounced inside the area. United's stand-in keeper Kyle Walton confidently dealt with several angled crosses from both flanks. Producing a terrific burst of speed was Max Leonard who ran onto a disguised pass from Matthew McCusker but United's main striker blasted the ball past the post.
Two pieces of excellent defending by Gareth Burns and Chris Lucas denied Deans the lead as the visitors displayed good movement off the ball. The move that led to Beechy opening the scoring involved Max Leonard and Scott Foulds and it was the latter who delivered a pinpoint low cross to Matthew McCusker who had timed his run to perfection and he slotted the ball home from close range. Still playing with lots of confidence Deans could easily have equalised had their No10 not wasted the chance from eight yards after a fine solo run from the visitors No9. Following a few more lively counter-attacks from the visitors Beechy went 2-0 up when Wes Pierce who had displayed some wonderful skill on the ball added the finish to a brilliant move involving Ben Donohue and Matthew Edwards in the 38th minute. United's third goal that arrived five minutes later came via a classic move that began thanks to a well timed ball winning tackle by Chris Lucas who quickly moved the ball onto Max Leonard and he set-up Martin McCusker for another accurate finish.
Straight from the restart in the second half Beechy maintained a constant flow of powerful attacks and a neat one-two between Ben Donohue and Wes Pierce saw the Deans keeper race quickly off his line to make a brave save. In the 50th minute superb play involving Scott Foulds, Wes Pierce and Ben Donohue won United a direct free kick and from the set-piece Max Leonard casually side footed the ball into the net. Deans briefly put together a few well created counter-attacks but overall Beechy dictated the pace of the game with Daniel Eckersley and Chris Lucas rock-solid in defence. Max Leonard made it 5-0 and United cruised to a comfortable victory when Wes Pierce who shared the Man of the Match Award with Scott Foulds completed the scoring. United who reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season are hoping for another good run this time around.
