- Added Time Winning Goal For First Team
A winning goal in added time earned Beechfield United's 1st Team a 3-2 home win over Manchester Gregorians. Twice United held the lead in this Manchester Football League Premier Division fixture played on 5/10/2019.
Forced to make team changes Beechy had a makeshift defence on duty that included Chris Ferris, Gareth Mooney and Craig Massey who has recently re-joined the club. Early attacks from Gregorians were focused down the left wing and Chris Ferris was forced to produce some resolute defending when under pressure. A free kick taken by Jordan Jones-Waite was well held by the Gregorians keeper then a couple of minutes later a Louis Duff corner created a goalmouth scramble. Louis was involved again when his neat angled pass found Ellis Carr who was making his debut but a Gregorians defender deflected the ball for a corner. Another fast flowing move by the visitors came to an end when the Gregorians No10 was caught in an offside position. Beechy opened the scoring in the 19th minute after Louis Duff and Jordan Jones-Waite combined and the latter played the ball back to Kurtis Lee who supplied a brilliant finish low past the keeper.
Less than four minutes later Gregorians equalised via their No11 but United continued to match their opponents work rate and commitment and in midfield Ethan Birds made numerous excellent ball winning tackles. Beechy keeper Robert Harrison plus Chris Ferris, Gareth Mooney and Craig Massey had to soak up more pressure before Beechy regained the lead after thirty two minutes. This time Kurtis Lee started the move that led to the goal with a fine pass onto Ellis Carr and his low cross was fired into the net off the crossbar by Jordan Jones-Waite. Several tight offside decisions ruined more quality United attacks and just before the whistle for half time Gregorians No8 made it 2-2 from the penalty spot. Within seconds of the restart there was a chance on offer for Kurtis Lee who just couldn't add the required finish following a move down the left flank. It was the visitors who looked the most likely to score the next goal and in quick succession Robert Harrison made vital saves one following a direct free kick then he dealt with a header on target from Gregorians No9.
The match retained its competitive edge with both teams competing fiercely for possession in all areas of the pitch and Beechy were asked to produce more top-class defending to stay in the game. United substitute Danny Royle delivered a pinpoint free kick into the area and finding both time and space was Kurtis Lee who's header was well saved by the Gregorians keeper. After getting forward deep into Gregorians half Craig Massey saw his curling cross skim the crossbar and Louis Duff played the ball back across the area and Danny Royle almost turned it into the net. There was some brilliant defensive work from Gareth Mooney prior to United's dramatic late match winning goal. Finding himself on the right flank was Ethan Birds who after bringing the ball under control delivered a high looping cross into the area and via an audacious finish Jordan Jones-Waite sent the ball past the keeper and into the corner of the net.
