- Challenge Cup Win For Beechy Ladies
In Challenge Cup 1st Round action on Sunday 9th October 2022 Beechfield United Ladies rediscovered the winning formula with an 8-1 home win over AFC Bolton Ladies.
*Beechy made a confident start and Becky Topping, Stacy Partridge, Jess Lawson and Becky Gregory were in involved in some neat quick passing moves. The visitors first real attack created a chance for AFC Bolton's No12 who forced a fairly easy save from Beechy keeper Alice Mosley. Stacy Partridge blasted the ball just wide then at the end of Beechy's next counter-attack Becky Topping forced a diving save from the visitors keeper. Excellent defending from Julie Ward, Shauna Smith and Monique Pollard denied AFC Bolton the chance of an early lead as the action moved swiftly from end to end. The AFC Bolton keeper was involved again following another quick passing move down the left flank between Kirsten Elrick, Monique Pollard and Jess Lawson.
The visitors varied style of play included the use of the long ball tactic and Shauna Smith dealt with three visitors attacks down the middle of the pitch with first class ball winning headers. Both Joanna Szafranska and Aimee Greenwood were involved in a few eye catching moves on the right wing as Beechy searched for the vital opening goal. The breakthrough eventually came in the 18th minute when Monique Pollard combined with Stacy Partridge who's great through pass set-up Jess Lawson and Beechy top-scorer fired the ball low past the keeper. Less than four minutes later AFC Bolton grabbed an equalising goal via their No17 who netted the rebound after Alice Mosley had saved a shot on target by the visitors No11.
Facing a period of pressure Beechy's back four remained well organised and once again Monique Pollard made a couple of well timed ball winning tackles as the visitors briefly focused their attacks down the right wing. After twenty four minutes Beechy regained the lead after Kirsten Elrick angled the ball onto Stacy Partridge and Beechy's No8 supplied a perfect through pass for Jess Lawson who once again added a decisive finish. Alice Mosley was called into action again on a couple of occasions and she confidently dealt with a free kick and a long range effort by the visitors No10. The visitors keeper save eforts from Aimee Greenwood, Jess Lawson and Becky Gregory before Beechy went 3-1 up on the half hour mark through Kirsten Elrick who met a cross from Jess Lawson and fired the ball into the roof of the net at the second attempt.
Shortly after AFC Bolton were reduced to ten players following a red card incident and Beechy took advantage of having the extra player when they added goal numbder four. The AFC Bolton goalkeeper mistimed her attempted kick downfield and the ball defelected off a teammate to Jess Lawson who punished the error as she completed her hat trick. Twice long range efforts from Stacy Partridge flashed just wide of the target as Beechy stepped up a gear but the visitors via the counter-attack continued to give Beechy's back four a few anxious moments. A pinpoint cross by Becky Topping was headed just wide by Shauna Smith then a great exchange of passes between Becky Gregory and Monique Pollard won Beechy another corner.
There was more good link-up play at the start of the second between Joanna Szafranska and Aimee Greenwood but it was the visitors who quickly found a better rhythm as they moved the ball around with both pace and accuracy. A corner taken by Jess Lawson nearly curled into the net at the far post forcing an AFC Bolton defender to booted the ball to safety. Following a corner to the visitors Alice Mosley managed to fist the ball away when under pressure then Shauna Smith made a vital headed clearance from inside the area. Despite having a player less AFC Bolton enjoyed more of the ball and played some very good football but the visitors were limited to just a few half chances during the second period. But Joanna, Julie, Shauna and Monique continued to remain alert when the visitors did counter-attack though Beechy gradually looked a greater threat going forward.
A move involving Becky Topping, Kirsten Elrick, Becky Gregory and Stacy Partridge set-up a shooting opportunity for Jess Lawson who's first time effort curled past the post. Monique Pollard sent a header just wide of target from a corner then Becky Gregory was just off target after Jess Lawson robbed the visitors No4 of the ball in midfield. Both goalkeepers made saves of similar quality prior to Beechy going 5-1 up after seventy five minutes via Becky Topping who latched onto a great through ball from Jess Lawson and cooly slotted it beyond the stranded keeper. Great defending from Player of the Match Joanna Szafranska earned generous applause before Beechy were rewarded with their sixth goal when Becky Topping was on target again in the 80th Minute.
Creating a powerful attacking surge in the last ten minutes Beechy carved out numerous chances and the AFC Bolton keeper was forced to concede a corner that led to Stacy Partridge sending a half volley into the net for 7-1. Stacy and Kirsten Elrick combined in the 88th minute and Becky Gregory completed the scoring with a neat and accurate finish. In the 2nd Round of the competition Beechy have an away tie against Mossley AFC Women.
