- A Disappointing Debut For Beechy Aces
Playing their first ever game in the Manchester Saturday Morning League were Beechfield United's new open age team "The Aces" who kicked-off the season at home game against New Moston Rangers.
In Division 2 Beechy made a disappointing start to the campaign when they suffered a 5-0 defeat. Straight from the kick-off New Moston Rangers looked full of confidence moving the ball around with real speed and accuracy. The Aces were quickly put under pressure and keeper Lloyd Grant was soon in action making a few vital saves. The visitors No8 & No 13 were at the heart of most prominent moves and in the 10th minute New Moston took the lead via their centre forward. Joe Croft won the Aces their first corner but new Moston defended the flag kick and were quickly back on the attack. Operating as a lone striker Jordan Walters was limited to just a few half chances as Beechy strived to get back level. Just before the 8th minute New Moston added their second goal and two minutes later the Aces found themselves 3-0 down.
Keeper Lloyd Grant rescued Beechy again as the visitors continued to control the match and Aces No5 Matty Styles was a key figure in an overworked back four. Wasted possession let the Aces down at times as they strived to get a foothold in the contest and Beechy still trailed by three goals at the break. New Moston maintained a strong grip on the game as the second half panned out and put Beechy under more pressure after winning a debatable penalty that resulted in the visitors No7 making it 4-0 with the spot-kick. A fifth Moston goal virtually ended the Aces hopes of a possible comeback but a few tactical changes produced an improved display from Beechy. Both Jonathan Royle and Nathan Haslam saw valid attempts to get a goal back miss the target during one of the Aces best spells of controlled attacking in the whole game.
But despite enjoying more of the ball the threat from New Moston via the counter-attack remained a major concern for the Aces. And once again Aces keeper and Man of the Match Lloyd Grant displayed his goalkeeping ability with more great saves. Joe Croft came close to an Aces consolation goal and a well executed free kick taken by Nathan Haslam forced a superb one handed save from the visitors keeper. Two brilliant last ditch tackles by Finn Parrott in the final few minutes denied New Moston another goal.
