- Opening Day Defeat For United's Reserve Team
Beechfield United Football Club's new Open Age Reserve Team began their first season in the Manchester Football League with an away game against Hindsford Development.
United have been allocated a place in Division 5 but they made a lacklustre start and suffered a 4-1 defeat. Beechy kicked-off with 4-3-3 formation and as they attacked up a slight slope on a grass pitch there were early touches of the ball in midfield for both Danny Lee and Keenan Switzer. United keeper Jason Rodgers was soon in action dealing with a free kick to the hosts who's first corner of the match produced a brilliant piece of defending from Macauley Knight. Some controlled attacking play from Hindsford especially down the left wing forced some resolute defending from United's back four. Twice in quick succession Jason Rodgers made vital saves the second save was a brilliant piece of goalkeeping when he denied Hindsford's No10 who hammered the ball at the target from close range. Beechy struggled to adapt to the pace of the game as Hindsford had a greater share of the ball and great defending from George Switzer and Macauley Knight continued to frustrate the hosts.
But after a Callum Davies fired a free kick over the crossbar Hindsford took the lead when their No10 was upended in the area and taking the spot-kick himself confidently opened the scoring. Beechy gradually started to move the ball around with more accuracy and forcing a corner almost drew level when Danny Lee met James Croft's flag kick but United's No11 headed the ball just wide. A poor piece of play gifted Hindsford their second goal when a loose crossfield pass went straight to an Hindsford player who combined with the hosts No9 and he fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net. As they struggled to create enough clear cut chances Beechy were restricted to shooting from long range and both William Cosgrove and Danny Lee attempted to beat the keeper from about twenty five yards. Substitutes Carlito Graham and Ben Shiels started the second half for United who found themselves 3-0 down in the 51st minute after a swift counter-attack resulted in Hindsford's No8 left with an easy finish from close range.
Best moments of the game for United arrived when William Cosgrove supplied an accurate forward pass onto Callum Davies who jinked his way past three Hindsford defenders and finished superbly for Beechy's consolation goal. A spectacular effort from about thirty five yards by Keenan Switzer went over the crossbar and showing more aggression in the second half United attacked with real intent but Hindsford's back four remained well organised. The hosts No11 had the ball in the net but the referee disallowed the goal for offside then James Croft went close to a second goal for Beechy but his low drive was inches the wrong side of the post. Man of the Match George Switzer and Deren Saunders rescued United with more great defending the latter heading the ball off the line following a free kick. In the closing minutes Beechy won a corner but wasted possession resulted in Hindsford moving the ball quickly upfield and their No10 netted the hosts fourth goal.
