- 1st Team Suffer First Defeat of The Season
A previous three match unbeaten run came to an end for Beechfield United's First Team who lost 3-1 to Rochdale Sacred Heart on Saturday 11th September 2021.
United Manager Mark McWilliams was forced to change a winning line-up for this away game against the current Premier Division leaders when four squad players were unavailable for various reasons. Kicking-off with a 4-5-1 system United made a sluggish start as they wasted possession far too easily and Sacred Heart nearly took an early lead. A brilliant long pass from Keenan Switzer sent Tom Allcock racing down the left flank and after easily ghosting past a hosts defender Tom fired the ball inches wide. Two great inswinging crosses by Hearts No11 caused Beechy major problems and United's back four Mike Phythian, Kyle Galbraith, Kurtis Lee and Danny Royle had to soak up some heavy pressure. On the quarter hour mark Beechy keeper Jack Galbraith made his first real save when he dealt with a direct free kick from Hearts No6 just before the hosts took the lead when Hearts No10 scored via a close range header.
Working hard to find an equaliser United failed to create enough clear cut chances and found themselves 2-0 after twenty eight minutes. Beechy had a goal disallowed for offside but eventually reduced the arrears when Keenan Swither robbed an opponent of the ball and lobbed it over the stranded keeper from outside the area. Beechy played with renewed confidence after the goal but the hosts kept a tight grip on the match and remained 2-1 up at half time. Early in the second half Jack Galbraith made a great save to deny the Hearts dangerous No11 of a goal and both Kyle Galbraith and Mike Phythian defended superbly when the hosts created another spell of non-stop attacking. Sam Bolton was the victim of numerous late tackles as United put more pressure on the ball in the second half with Zach Murray and Keenan Switzer who shared the Man of the Match award both producing great performances in midfield. Bradley Hodges had also played well throughout the match.
A mistake by the Hearts keeper was nearly punished by United's striker Callum Davies and as play drifted rapidly from end to end Hearts continually threatened to score again. After another great well timed tackle by Keenan Switzer the ball deflected off a hosts defender and from close range Callum Davies fired it straight at the keeper. A few minutes later slightly against the run of play Hearts wrapped up the three points with their third goal.
