POSTED: September 29 2021 15:53:32 By Keith Long - Ladies Match Ruined By Controversial Decisions

Beechy Ladies Division 1 home game against Mancunian Unity on Sunday 26th September 2021 was ruined by far too many controversial decisions.

Beechy endured another tough ninety minutes and a 7-2 defeat didn't ease their early season woes in the Greater Manchester Womens League. Including three recent new signings in the squad Beechy were hoping for a good performance and making a promising start United put early pressure on their opponents and one great move between Sophie Wainwright, Aimee Greenwood and Emily Walmsley ended when the latter fired the ball off target. The visitors No15 produced a strong surging run down the left wing but when inside the area sent the ball wide of the target.

Beechy's keeper Holly Grimes had to race to the edge of her area to clear the ball upfield when Mancunian Unitys No10 chased a long through pass. Despite a decent start Beechy found themselves a goal down but the referee made the wrong decision when he awarded the goal after a clear foul on Holly Grimes left her needing treatement for a hand injury. The visitors who went 2-0 up after twenty minutes continued to force some brilliant defending from Shauna Smith, Julie Ward and Bethany Hill and Monique Pollard. Megan Mirfield made her Beechy debut when she replaced Ashleigh Morris and a few minutes later a spectaculative effort by Stacy Partridge bounced back into play off the post.

Following another controversial decision Mancunian Unity led 3-0 but Beechy reduced the arrears when Becky Topping took a free kick and played the ball forward to Stacy Partridge who blasted it into the roof of the net. United's celebrations were short lived following a lucky fourth goal for the visitors after a clearance by Holly Grimes rebounded into the net off a Unity forward and a fifth goal for Mancunian Unity left the Beechy players feeling somewhat deflated.

The match official angered Beechy again after he deemed that a tackle by Monique Pollard was just inside the area and awarded Manqunian Unity a generous penalty and the visitors No9 added her teams sixth goal with the resulting spot-kick. Beechy had a mountain to climb in the second half and were soon under pressure again surviving a heart stopping moment after an effort from Unity's No10 hit the post. Becky Topping, Stacy Partridge and Aimee Greenwood who had a superb game continued to be featured in most of Beechy's best moves but goalscoring chances remained few and far between. Holly Grimes made two great saves and Sian Anderson via a header cleared the ball near the goallline prior to Beechy conceding a seventh goal.

Continually finding their opponents a tough and well organised unit to break down Beechy were gifted a second goal in the 74th minute when the visitors keeper fumbled the ball into the net following a corner taken by Becky Topping. More brave defending from Bethany Hill, Sian Anderson and Juile Ward kept the visitors at bay in the latter stages as Mancunian Unity eased their way to a comfortable victory. Monique Pollard was named Beechy's Player of the Match while the visitors voted for Julie Ward.
